Shanghai Express (1932)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 82m
Director: Josef von Sternberg
Cast: Marlene Dietrich, Clive Brook, Warner Oland, Anna May Wong

Synopsis:

Caught up in the turmoil of events in China, a high-class prostitute journeys with her maid on a train also bearing a former lover and British captain with whom it may or may not be politic to renew relations.

Review:

Totally splendid Paramount pastiche posing as historical drama. The best of von Sternberg's collaborations with Dietrich, its dialogue and cinematography are entirely in tune with the atmosphere of erotic promise and danger. Or 'European decadence', as the Hays Office would have it.
