Synopsis:

A self-made family of society's outcasts subsists on menial jobs, familial bribes and petty theft. When they rescue a neglected little girl, the bond between tightens even more.

Review:

Koreeda's rueful reappraisal of the old adage, 'blood is thicker than water', is set over the course of a year, though that is as close as it gets to having any sort of narrative structure. Instead, as often in his work, a series of vignettes establishes the various characters and puts flesh on the central tenet that the lowest in society are often the most humane - and possibly the happier.
