Spare the Rod (1961)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: bw 93m
Director: Leslie Norman
Cast: Max Bygraves, Donald Pleasence, Geoffrey Keen, Betty McDowell, Richard O'Sullivan

Synopsis:

A wet-behind-the-ears teacher cuts his teeth at an East End school, where antiquated educational methods do battle with progressive ones.

Review:

Two years after Carry on Teacher came this more serious attempt to get to grips with the generation gap left by the war. Bygraves does a decent job as the NQT desperately trying to be decent, Keen is the classic 'old school' Deputy, and O'Sullivan even gets to reprise his role. The usual pitfalls abound (lessons consisting of the last two minutes before the bell, daily ups and downs exaggerated into hearts and minds too easily won, and lost), but this remains a fascinating, and quite endearing, time capsule nevertheless.
