The Salt of Life (2011)

£0.00

(Gianni e le donne)

Country: IT
Technical: col 90m
Director: Gianni Di Gregorio
Cast: Gianni Di Gregorio, Valeria De Franciscis, Alfonso Santagata, Valeria Cavalli

Synopsis:

Settled into retirement and enjoying a comfortable but henpecked existence between his wife's daily errand-setting and his mother's incessant cries for attention, Gianni mourns the disappearance of romance from his life.

Review:

On the face of it another charmingly observed slice of everyday Italian life, from the director of Mid-August Lunch. However, beneath its indulgent nostalgia for the beauty of young feminine flesh there is an insouciant skill in the deployment of actors and objects that anchors them firmly in reality; where a Woody Allen might have strayed too far into fantasy, Di Gregorio knows when to cut and move on. This admittedly makes the comedy oh, so light, but never less than poignant when one considers what is at stake, making the closing montage's surrender to wish-fulfilment all the more poignant.
