The Ship that Died of Shame (1955)

£0.00

(PT Raiders)

Country: GB
Technical: bw 88m
Director: Basil Dearden
Cast: George Baker, Richard Attenborough, Virginia McKenna, Bill Owen, Bernard Lee, Roland Culver

Synopsis:

After the war, the crew of an MGB reclaims her and uses her for illicit activities across the Channel. But as the consignments become increasingly unsavoury, the ship begins to make her objections known.

Review:

While having some elements in common with Ghost Ship (1952), this Ealing film sensibly harnesses its tale of the uncanny to a dignified past defending the homeland. Attenborough's usual spiv act is a little overdetermined, but production values are high in spite of the model shots, and the cast plays its end well, achieving a sense of genuine unease. A worthy film in the 'adaptation to civvy street' sub-genre.
