The Squaw Man (1931)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 107m
Director: Cecil B. DeMille
Cast: Warner Baxter, Lupe Vélez, Eleanor Boardman, Charles Bickford, Roland Young

Synopsis:

An English earl makes his way to the Rockies after being wrongfully implicated in a financial scandal. There he falls foul of a cattle baron who has the sheriff in his pocket, has his life saved by an Indian girl, and gets a son by her.

Review:

DeMille's definitive filming of a 1905 play he had adapted twice before (1914, 1918). The attitudes are suitably old-fashioned: if you are caught in dishonesty you shoot yourself, if you love another man's wife leave the country, if you get a native child send him back to England for a decent education...Vélez of course is Mexican. Nevertheless, given its age it is appreciably brisk and sophisticated in sound terms, though Baxter and Young are a little stiff, old boy. As usual with DeMille it is swooningly sentimental, with the final shot panning from the expiring Naturich down to the unappreciated toy horse she had made her son, discarded under the bed.
