Synopsis:
A widower takes his mother and daughter to an island in the archipelago for the summer. There he mourns his dead wife while nursing a tree back to life, and the women explore their surroundings, variously communing with the past and fighting off boredom with the present.
Review:
Based on an autobiographical book by Tove Jansson, this is no Swallows and Amazons. The pacing is so gentle, the screenplay so short on incident that an invitation to a slice of cake by another family of escapees ranks as one of the most engaging sequences in the film. Quite what drew Close to it is a mystery. The granddaughter is far from endearing and the husband practically taciturn. It makes you long for the overwrought family drama of Through a Glass Darkly!
