In 90s New York, after a stretch in a correctional facility, a homeless young woman plucks her boy out of foster care and moves to Harlem to begin a new life. His lack of regular documentation, however, is a time bomb waiting to catch up with them both.

This tale of motherhood from the ghettos carries a strong lead performance, as Taylor bravely moves from defensive twenty-something to hardworking homebuilder to vulnerable widowed mother in her mid-30s. It avoids the commonplaces of bruising rows, criminal recidivism and drug abuse; yet although she is far from a perfect mother, in one respect she shown to be irreplaceable. The film asks us to reflect on both the value of that and the societal cost for her son.
