The Thief of Bagdad (1940)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 109m
Director: Michael Powell, Ludwig Berger, Tim Whelan
Cast: Conrad Veidt, Sabu, John Justin, June Duprez

Synopsis:

A market thief helps a prince escape the spell of a wicked usurper and rescue the princess.

Review:

A series of adventures within an adventure, this film incorporated much of the magic and variety of the Arabian Nights while retaining narrative cohesion. It is a colourful, effects-filled classic which shows real enthusiasm for its subject and even finds time for song. Its repeated prophecy lends it a messianic quality which, in tandem with the faith in goodness and beauty oozing from every frame, is a spiritual dimension absent from all other treatments of this material.
