(Teorema)
![]()
Country: IT
Technical: col 98m
Director: Pier Paolo Pasolini
Cast: Terence Stamp, Silvana Mangano, Massimo Girotti, Anne Wiazemsky, Laura Betti
Synopsis:
A young man moves in with a bourgeois family and captivates each member to his or her undoing. Is he Christ or the Devil?
Review:
Very boring Sixties pretentiousness, with Mozart's Requiem coughing and spluttering on the soundtrack like a parody of a Godard film. The interpolated shots of Mt Etna swept by cloud are a relief from the underlit colours of the rest of the film, and presumably represent repressed passions, or the aridity of Pasolini's hated class. The question he poses is whether the bourgeoisie can ever be redeemed from utter awfulness by acts of generosity, or by a second coming. It is unclear whether Stamp's character seduces them or they him, but their surrender to the authentic brings only self-disgust, breakdown or madness. Ergo, they are worthless.
