Vermiglio (2024)

£0.00

Country: IT/FR/BEL
Technical: col 119m
Director: Maura Delpero
Cast: Tommaso Ragno, Roberta Rovelli, Martina Scrinzi, Giuseppe De Domenico

Synopsis:

When, during WW2, a pair of deserters arrives at a remote Alpine village, they are given succour by the schoolmaster's family, whose nephew one of them is. The other, a Sicilian, falls in love with his eldest daughter, but their troubles don't end there.

Review:

Beautifully composed and exhaustively detailed, this portrait of the inexorable march of the seasons punctuated by human joys and sufferings is equally implacably paced. However, short, self-contained scenes add layers to the weft of experience but do little to generate drama. The most significant character, a father of ten, is a lover of classical music and erotic photographs, but the closest we get to a crisis point is when his authority is challenged by his wife or eldest son. As for the three daughters they are all but ciphers, fitting neatly into 'devoted self-chastiser', 'autodidact' and 'all but mute mother-to-be'. And of the Sicilian's inevitably conflicted feelings we learn nothing.
