Volver (2005)

£0.00

Country: SP
Technical: Eastmancolor/2.35:1 121m
Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Cast: Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Dueñas, Blanca Portillo

Synopsis:

A mother in a sleepy, superstitious town is unexpectedly divested of her husband when her daughter knifes him in the kitchen protecting her honour. Meanwhile her aunt dies and her mother's ghost moves in with her sister, holding the secret of a soap operatic past guaranteed to blow the town apart if only anyone outside these thick-as-thieves females knew about it.

Review:

Almodóvar reorganises his past fictional world once more to the general delight of audiences: strong female characters, undeserving men, outrageous dramatic detail, the relationship with his roots. It's lit up by a career-topping performance from Cruz and a bravely unglamorous one from Maura. The scene in which the former sings the song taught her by the latter without the knowledge of her existence, let alone her attendance, stands as the emotional highlight and is of course classic Hollywood melodrama in flamenco clothing. Gorgeous.
