A Woman's Secret (1949)
Country: US
Technical: bw 84m
Director: Nicholas Ray
Cast: Maureen O'Hara, Melvyn Douglas, Gloria Grahame, Jay C. Flippen, Mary Philips
Synopsis:
A former singer shoots her protégée, whom she has groomed to stardom, and her former accompanist mounts a campaign to clear her name, by wining and dining the police inspector whose wife is an amateur sleuth.
Review:
Ray's sophomore feature is an RKO quickie that combines Douglas's dependable talents with Herman Mankiewicz's ear for dialogue, particularly the kind uttered by cynical policemen. Unfortunately, the plot is a bit of a dud, with much of the film consisting of flashbacks to prove how selfless O'Hara has been, when it is she who has confessed to the shooting (why, is never quite made clear). Never mind, it crackles along goofily enough for us not to care much, and there is an interesting whiff of sexuality surrounding O'Hara's protectiveness towards Grahame.
