The Winter Guest (1997)

£0.00

Country: GB/US
Technical: col 108m
Director: Alan Rickman
Cast: Phyllida Law, Emma Thompson, Sheila Reid, Gary Hollywood, Arlene Cockburn, Sean Biggerstaff

Synopsis:

As the sea freezes over at a coastal Scottish town, a recently bereaved wife and her mother are one of four couples at varying stages on the journey between life and death.

Review:

Its characters tending to be more fixated on futility and loss, this uneven project turns into something of a dirge. They never seem quite cold enough for how cold it must be, there is far too much swearing, and it desperately needs someone to crack some funny lines after the fashion of Richard Burton (Iguana) or David Threlfall (Naked). The final shot, as the boys lose each other on the pack ice, in vain strains after significance.
