War and Peace (1956)

£0.00

Country: US/IT
Technical: col/Vistavision 208m
Director: King Vidor, Mario Soldati
Cast: Audrey Hepburn, Henry Fonda, Mel Ferrer, Herbert Lom

Synopsis:

Pierre secretly loves Natasha, does his best to protect her Andrei, tries to assassinate Napoleon after the Battle of Borodino and survives the Retreat from Moscow.

Review:

A lumpen précis of a vast novel, done better justice in Bondarchuk's version. The pictures are great but the acting is mostly stilted and the action diffuse, exceptions to both being Herbert Lom and Oscar Homolka as military antagonists and the final retreat from Moscow which is a grand set piece.
