Wild Rose (2018)

£0.00

Country: GB/US/CAN
Technical: col/2.35:1 101m
Director: Tom Harper
Cast: Jessie Buckley, Julie Walters, Sophie Okonedo

Synopsis:

A Glaswegian girl from the estates, who has already taken a couple of wrong turns in life, nevertheless nurtures the dream of taking her vocal talents to Nashville. Thanks to a well connected employer for whom she cleans, she almost comes close.

Review:

Not the rags to riches one might expect - and all the better for that - this transcendent tale of self-realization features a none too ingratiating heroine and her twin maternal figures: one who constantly reminds her of her responsibilities, the other fostering her hope. Each offers her the opportunity to strike out, but it is when she strikes out in the other sense that she finally produces material of her own. It is a rousing, Coalminer's Daughter trajectory, and Buckley shows herself more than up to making it convincing.
