William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (2004)

£0.00

Country: GB/LUX/IT/US
Technical: DeLuxe/Super 35 132m
Director: Michael Radford
Cast: Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes, Lynn Collins

Synopsis:

Venice at the end of the 16th century: to prosecute his love suit Bassanio raises money from his friend Antonio, who in turn borrows the sum from a Jewish moneylender. The latter, having a grudge to bear against Antonio, forfeits the customary payment of interest but exacts the forfeit of a pound of flesh should Antonio not make repayment within three months.

Review:

Shakespeare's grimmest comedy is given lavish treatment in this screen version, where the frivolity of the lovers' riddles and deceptions are tellingly contrasted with the tragic vicissitudes of the Venetian plot through production design and the casting of the heavyweight actors in the roles of Shylock and Antonio.
