Country: GB/US
Technical: col 136m
Director: Emerald Fennell
Cast: Margot Robbie, Jacob Elordi, Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Martin Clunes
Synopsis:
In this version, Earnshaw is a drinker and gambler, Edgar Anglo-Indian and Nelly an oriental; Hindley is therefore left out, and Isabella demoted to being Linton's ward. Which last doesn't matter because, again, they only do the first half of the book.
Review:
Fennell's baroque-gothic Wuthering Heights is like a cross between Tim Burton and Guillermo del Toro, all decked out in Laura Ashley. Leaving aside the external apparel and wilful remodelling, however, it comes closer than its predecessor's to capturing the vicissitudes and wounding jealousies of the Cathy/Heathcliff relationship, with plenty of sex to erase any doubts about the precise nature of their sibling love. Like the sex, though, it does grind on interminably.
